Spend Money Where You Spend the Most Time

I come from an upper middle-class Chinese family. My dad gets paid a 6-digit salary working as a software engineer and my mom collects monthly rent from tenants.

Even though they both could afford to splurge, they hold back whenever they see the price tag.

For rice. For pillows. For kitchen equipment. For office chairs.

I’m not sure if it’s Chinese culture or if they personally just like to save up, but they never buy the best of things they use most. Which, to me, is a bit impractical.

Because if you have the money, why not maximize the usefulness of your dollar and spend it on things you do most?

A more comfortable pillow gives you longer, deeper sleep.

A better pan makes your food tastier.

A nicer office chair helps you focus longer at work.

In the end, it all pays off. When you work more efficiently and enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle, you accomplish a LOT more.

Let me use myself as an example to illustrate what I mean.

I write on my phone for 6 hours, which comes down to 37.5% of my waking day. And usually, Notes is my #1 platform to whipping up good stories.

An old draft I never finished

The only thing is, it takes me over 10 hours to finish one post. A serious problem that’s been slowing my pursuit of becoming a top Medium writer.

Until I discovered Bear — a beautiful, simple writing app.

The #1 writing app I use to make good stories like these | Bear 🐻

The moment my fingers started typing on Bear, I knew it was going to be a total game changer.

But then I saw the annual subscription.

$14.99 for a year?!? That’s a lot for a writing tool.

Before I let my rash mind decide, I gave myself another minute…and bought it.

Now, I finish a post in 5 hours (a 200% increase in productivity).

Don’t think about the price. Think about your day.

When we find something we know would upgrade our productivity, our leisure time and happiness, we hesitate at the price.

If you want to accomplish more and be happier with your life, evaluate where you spend most of your day on and get the best for it.

After all, the price is what you pay and the value is what you get.
